Vivienne Westwood Shoe Exhibition

Famous for sky-high heels and unbelievably high platforms, British fashion designer Vivienne Westwood has been producing killer heels in her fashion collections way before these shoes became more mainstream. And now an exhibition featuring the eccentric designer's footwear creations has been unveiled. Largely credited with creating the punk look of the late 1970s the exhibition provides a retrospective history of cutting edge shoe design.

The exhibition, entitled Vivienne Westwood Shoes – an Exhibition 1973-2010, will be hosted at Selfridges in London. Many of Westwood's most famous shoes will be on display including her Pirate Boots from 1981 that were a part of the New Romantic fashion movement, the six inch heeled Mary Jane shoes that were apparently inspired by nurses and the infamous Super Elevated Gillie platform shoes. The Gillie platforms will be best remembered as the shoes supermodel Naomi Campbell was wearing when she took a tumble on the catwalk. In more recent years Westwood has produced an Alice in Wonderland inspired plastic shoe called the Melissa Heart shoe that has been affordable and therefore extremely popular.

Vivienne Westwood has never believed in designing sensible shoes believing that shoes should be 'sexy' first and foremost. She is reported to have said ""Shoes must have very high heels and platforms to put women's beauty on a pedestal." The exhibition is a must for any Westwood fan or anyone who simply loves shoes and it runs from August 26th till September 22nd.
