Flips Flops can be Bad for You

As Spring turns to Summer, our feet crave the freedom of flip-flops. We love to feel the cooling breeze on our skin, and not have to deal with hot and sweaty feet. And flip-flops are so cheap you can buy a number of pairs without going to the bank for a mortgage. Scrimping though doesn't do your feet any favours either.

These are just a few of the reasons you should pass on flip-flops and choose for more supportive shoes.

  • Flip flop soles are spongy and offer no arch support.

The sole may seem soft and comfy, but your foot ends up over-pronating (rolling inward), especially as there's usually no added support for the arches of your feet. This is likely to cause pain in the heels, arches, ball of the foot, and toes. Having said that there are some excellent flip flops out there such as Fit Flops and Flexy Feet from Foot Petals both of which will provide you with the necessary arch support and shock absorption to keep your feet pain free.

  • Muscles and tendons have to work harder.

As flip flops usually only have a little v-shaped straps across your toes, there's not a lot holding the shoes to your feet. When you walk, you end up gripping your toes together to keep your flops on, making the muscles and tendons in your feet do all the work. This simple action may lead to tendonitis.

  • Flat shoes strain the Achilles tendon.

If you generally wear shoes that have a raised or high heel, flat shoes can end up stretching the calf muscles.

  • There's no ankle support.

Sprained ankles in the Summer are common because of flip-flop use.

  • Wearing flips flops can lead to heel fissures and calluses.

The constant pounding on the backs of your feet not only hardens the skin, but as your feet are exposed to air, skin can, and does, dry out. If the skin gets too dry, the callused skin cracks and bleeds, which is often extremely painful.

  • May be the cause of lower back and hip pain.

Wearing flip-flops, tends to alter your gait, with you ending up taking shorter steps, which may lead to pain in some other areas of your body.

  • Flip flops offer no protection from people stepping on your feet, stubbing your toes or cutting them.

When you wear flip-flops, one definitely ends up with more cuts, splinters and bruised toes.

  • Experts don't say you should never wear flip-flops ever. They definitely have their place and are super for the beach or pool — or showers at the gym — just be sure not don't walk in them for long periods. Flip-flops are the definition of Summer, so does reading all these negatives alter your mind about how often you'll wear your flip-flops?

I trust not, as all you have to do is make sure you wear a version of flip flop that provides the arch support and shock absorption your feet need.
